The First Council House in Britain

First Council House Wansbeck matters

The first Council House.

Was this the first Council House built in Britain?

It was completed in 1916 with a grand ceremony in Cleveland Avenue, Newbiggin by the Sea to fulfil the promise of ‘HOMES FIT FOR HEROES’.

Four Avenues of houses followed, Northumberland, Westmorland, Cumberland and Sutherland.
